ULTRASOUND
Ultrasound (also known as sonography) is a method of imaging your unborn fetus. Maternal Fetal Diagnostic Center uses board-certified Perinatologists in an AIUM accredited department with registered sonographers using state of the art equipment to obtain high-resolution images of the fetus and uterine environment. When indicated, pulse wave doppler and color mapping will also be performed.
As a perinatal center, Dr. Potter and his staff are charged with assisting your physician in giving the highest caliber of care to you and your unborn baby.
Sonograms (ultrasounds) are sometimes referred to at different “levels”
- A Level I ultrasound is obtained to determine fetal position and amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby in the gestational sac.
- A Level II ultrasound includes measurements of the fetus to determine estimated gestational age, estimated fetal weight, a survey of the fetal anatomy to assess for major abnormalities, as well as the information obtained in a Level I ultrasound.
- A Level III ultrasound includes all of the information obtained in Level I and II ultrasounds as well as a targeted anatomy survey to assess for evidence of genetic defects and other pathology.
- A Fetal Echocardiogram is a comprehensive exam of the fetal heart. When indicated by the findings, Dr. Potter may schedule a follow up fetal echocardiogram with the Pediatric Cardiologist performed in our Buckhead office.
While we take our work very seriously, we also feel the ultrasound experience should be a time of bonding between the parents and the unborn baby. For this reason we ask that you not bring small children to the exam without someone to supervise them. Children like to be entertained, which can distract the patient and care provider. For your convenience we provide a VCR on which we will record a portion of your ultrasound for later viewing with the family in a leisurely environment. You may provide your own video-tape or purchase one from our staff.
While we also have 3D/4D capabilities, this service is provided as a complimentary adjunct to the fetal exam and we cannot guarantee the fetus will cooperate for the picture. Please understand we can only devote a limited amount of time to the 3D/4D portion of the exam since it does not add diagnostic information. If a 3D/4D picture is important to you and we are not able to obtain a picture, there are non-medical facilities with services available that will try for a fee ranging from $100.00 to $250.00. |
