BIOPHYSICAL PROFILE (BPP)

A Biophysical Profile is a specialized ultrasound to evaluate the fetal well being by assessing the fetal behavior. The BPP consists of four observations made within a specific time frame, during real-time sonography and may also include NST (non-stress testing). Therefore the BPP may comprise five components.

    1. Fetal breathing motions
    2. Fetal movement episode
    3. Fetal tone
    4. Amniotic fluid assessment
    5. NST (non-stress testing)
Each of the five components is assigned a score of either 2 (normal or present) or 0 (abnormal, absent, or insufficient). The combined score and clinical information is considered and management recommendations are determined.
